Diagnosing Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Your doctor may conduct one of the following physical exams, on top of asking you a few questions about the symptoms you’ve been experiencing if he suspects that you may have GERD.

  • Upper endoscopy
A small flexible tube with a tiny camera at the end is threaded into your esophagus to examine it and collect a sample of tissue (biopsy) if needed.
  • Barium swallow
After drinking a barium solution, X-ray imaging is used to examine your upper digestive tract.
  • Esophageal manometry
A flexible tube is threaded into your esophagus to measure the strength of your esophageal muscles

You may be advised to make some dietary changes if diagnosed with GERD. One of the treatments that could be prescribed are over the counter antacids, which you can buy in any pharmacy in Grand Prairie, Texas.
